FAQ
F.A.Q.

1. What causes varicose veins?

The most common cause is heredity. Obesity, old age, prolonged standing in an upright position and pregnancy are all contributing factors. Exposure to oral contraceptives or female hormone replacement therapies may also predispose people to varicose and spider veins.

2. Can varicose veins become dangerous to my health?

Although not directly life threatening, they may be the source of swelling, nocturnal leg and foot cramps, and muscular twitches. If left untreated, varicose veins may eventually lead to skin discoloration and breakdown, ulcers, and inflammation of the veins (phlebitis). Spider veins may cause a burning sensation, tingling or numbness.

3. What type of corrective treatment is involved?

There are 2 methods:

-Surgery for about 25% of cases is recommended when there is a significant back-up of blood flow in a major surface vein.
-Sclerotherapy is used to treat the smaller varicose veins as well as spider veins before they have reached the stage where more complicated medical intervention may be required.

4. Will the procedure hurt?

Not really. The injections are relatively painless. They feel much like the stinging of mosquito bites.

5. What are the benefits of the treatment?

Most or all of the pain symptoms and the swelling caused by varicose veins will disappear. The aesthetic appearance of the legs, will, in most cases, be visibly improved.

6. Can I carry on my usual activities following sclerotherapy?

Yes, but a word of caution. You should not lift weights or do squatting exercises for several days following injections. Avoid hot baths and showers, massages, and suntanning for one week following treatment.

7. Is any follow-up treatment necessary?

Annual check-ups are advisable to prevent progression or re-occurrence of varicose veins. There are some measures one can take, and there are some situations that should be avoided if at all possible:

-Avoid long periods of immobility
-Stretch feet and calf muscles frequently whether standing or seated.
-Exercise and participate in sports.
-Watch your weight.
-Wear low heels, loose clothing.
-Wear support hose.
